On May 2nd, the United Kingdom and Chile took a significant step forward in their shared commitment to gender equality by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in

Gender Equality. The agreement was signed in London by Baroness Chapman, the UK Minister for Latin America, and Gloria de la Fuente González, Chile’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, during her official visit to the UK.

This MoU—the first of its kind signed by the UK—represents a major milestone in both nations’ dedication to a foreign policy that champions women’s rights. It highlights their joint commitment to building more inclusive, equitable, and respectful societies.

The agreement outlines plans for sustained cooperation through political dialogue, knowledge sharing, and joint initiatives. It focuses on key areas including women’s political participation and their role in international affairs.

Baroness Chapman, Minister for International Development, Latin America and the Caribbean, said:

“Chile is a vital partner in our shared efforts to promote equality for women and girls.

The MoU establishes mechanisms for cooperation, political dialogue and best practices in key areas, such as the promotion of participation in international affairs and the political empowerment of women and girls”.

Louise de Sousa, British Ambassador to Chile, said:

“The signing of this memorandum strengthens bilateral ties between the United Kingdom and Chile and establishes cooperation to deliver equality for women and girls around the world”.
