Asunción is preparing for the 10th edition of British Week, a nine-day programme showcasing British culture and connections across Paraguay.
The British Embassy in Asunción is marking a decade of British Week in Paraguay with a programme of events running from 15 to 23 August 2026.
The anniversary edition will bring together British and Paraguayan interests spanning food, music, literature, education, business, academia and popular culture, as the embassy seeks to highlight the UK's longstanding links with the South American country.
Now in its 10th year, British Week has become an annual platform for introducing Paraguayan audiences to different aspects of contemporary British life, while also promoting educational and cultural ties between the two countries.
Among the highlights will be talks on little-known historical links between Britain and Paraguay, British food and drink events, academic activities, film screenings and live music.
The week will open on Saturday 15 August with a presentation by Guillaume Candela, a scholar from Cardiff University, exploring stories of women, corsairs, friars and Guarani leaders and their connections with the British Isles in the 16th Century.
Later that day, a British music celebration will take place at Feria Palmear in central Asunción.
Food will feature prominently throughout the programme. Participating venues will offer British-style menus, beer, afternoon tea and traditional fish and chips. Visitors will also be able to take part in a "Fish and Chips Passport", or "Fishaport", with a raffle planned for participants.
A British brunch at Palmaroga on Sunday 16 August will be followed the next day by a live demonstration of fish and chips by chef Jorge Iriberri at Casa Rica.
The programme also has a strong literary and educational element. Children and families will be invited to a reading of a Paddington Bear story, while prospective Chevening scholars can attend a session on the scholarship experience and a dedicated essay-writing workshop.
On Tuesday, participants will be able to take a virtual tour of the Jane Austen Museum, while a lecture organised with the University of London will form part of Wednesday's academic programme.
British Week will also offer a taste of British popular culture. On Thursday 20 August, audiences can watch Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in English with Spanish subtitles at Cinemark.
The same evening will feature a Triumph-themed event celebrating British motorcycling, followed by an Oasis tribute concert at Sacramento Brewing Co.
Football fans will have their own event on Friday, with a watch party for the opening of the Premier League season featuring Arsenal against Coventry.
The final weekend will continue the British theme with another fish and chips demonstration, a Triumph motorcycle ride and a Britpop concert. A performance by Madera Noruega will close the programme on Saturday 22 August at Palo Santo Brewing Co.
British products, cars and motorcycles will also be displayed at Casa Rica locations in Molas López and Los Laureles, alongside an exhibition dedicated to British natural historian and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough.
The anniversary celebrations are intended not simply to promote British food and entertainment but to underline the breadth of relations between the UK and Paraguay.
With activities ranging from university lectures and scholarship advice to literature, cinema, music, food and motorcycling, the organisers are using the 10th anniversary to present a broad picture of Britain's cultural and educational links with Paraguay.
Most events are free, although some have limited capacity or require advance registration, while several activities are invitation-only.
The British Embassy has encouraged people interested in attending to check its social media channels for registration details, event updates and prize draws during the week.
British Week 2026 runs from Saturday 15 August to Sunday 23 August in venues across Asunción.
