Mossad director David Barnea has disclosed that his organization successfully thwarted 27 Iranian-led terror attack threats against Israel and Jewish targets worldwide in the
past year.
In a rare address at Israel's Reichman University's Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT), Barnea outlined five factors contributing to Iranian self-confidence. These factors included Iran's support to Russia, specifically in selling unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and diplomatic understandings with Saudi Arabia. Barnea, however, cautioned that these arrangements were not long-term strategic agreements but rather temporary partnerships.
Barnea also noted Iran's resilience in the face of domestic protests, particularly those related to the wearing of the hijab, and attributed its survival to increased oil sales, mainly to China, which improved its balance of payments. He also highlighted Iran's success in hostage diplomacy.
Discussing the Iranian-led attacks against Israel and Jewish targets globally, Barnea cited examples of thwarted attacks in Tanzania, Greece, Cyprus, and Georgia.
As the Jewish High Holy Days approached, Barnea issued a stern warning, stating that any harm inflicted on Israelis or Jews, regardless of the method or proxy used, would result in a response against the individuals responsible, from the perpetrators to the policymakers. He emphasized that this response would extend deep into Iran, even reaching the heart of Tehran.
Barnea stressed that these attacks were state-sponsored terrorism, orchestrated by a political directive from Iran's Supreme Leader, funded from state coffers, and executed by national security and intelligence agencies.
He further highlighted Iran's use of terror in four arenas: on the domestic front, regionally, internationally, and at sea.
In conclusion, Barnea called on the international community to take a firm stance against Iran, condemning its negative behavior, and taking action to restrain its nuclear program, regional policies, and terrorist activities.
Barnea's key messages were clear: a direct warning to the Iranian leadership that attacks on Israeli or Jewish targets abroad would lead to direct accountability and a response within Tehran itself.
During his visit to Israel, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is also expected to address the ICT conference and address the Iranian threat. Cleverly will accuse Iran of "enabling terrorism" through its support for Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
In a statement ahead of his visit, Cleverly reaffirmed the UK's commitment to its security partnership with Israel and its determination to counter the threats posed by the Iranian regime.
Barnea also drew attention to the impending end of the embargo on Iran's missile imports next month, expressing concern that Iran would exploit this opportunity to acquire materials for manufacturing larger quantities of higher-quality missiles and UAVs.
