German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has advocated for new international discussions on nuclear disarmament, emphasizing the need to involve not only Russia and the United
States but also China.
Speaking at a religious event in Berlin, Scholz stressed the significance of initiating a renewed arms control dialogue. He highlighted that several other nations had developed nuclear arsenals, warranting a broader approach to nuclear disarmament.
Scholz also emphasized the importance of preventing Iran from producing uranium that could be used in the creation of nuclear weapons. He referred to this as an ongoing crucial task.
Furthermore, the German Chancellor underscored that nuclear weapons represent an existential threat to humanity. He expressed a compelling "immediate obligation" to take all necessary measures to ensure that these weapons are never deployed.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the number of operational nuclear weapons increased slightly in 2022. This uptick was attributed to countries executing long-term force modernization and expansion plans. Photo by Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung from Berlin, Deutschland, Wikimedia commons.
