Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has emphasized the need for reinforcements during the January transfer window, acknowledging that the team is "short in a couple of areas."
Spurs have struggled in recent weeks, losing three of their last four Premier League matches and slipping to 11th in the table. Their recent woes were underscored by a heavy 6-3 home defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.
The team’s dip in form has coincided with injuries to key players, including goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
Ahead of Tottenham’s Boxing Day clash against fourth-placed Nottingham Forest, Postecoglou confirmed the club’s intention to bolster the squad in January.
“We’ve been planning for this window for a while,” Postecoglou explained. “A lot depended on where we’d be at this point, and it’s clear we’re still a bit short in certain areas. Reinforcements are needed.”
The Australian coach acknowledged the challenges of signing quality players in January but stressed the importance of bringing in individuals who can genuinely strengthen the team.
“January is always trickier because the market is more limited. Ideally, you want to sign players who can make an immediate impact,” he said.
Despite their Premier League struggles, Tottenham have had brighter moments this season. They secured a place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals after an exhilarating 4-3 victory over Manchester United earlier this month. Additionally, Spurs remain in contention for progression in the Europa League and are set to face Tamworth in the FA Cup third round on January 12.
“Our schedule isn’t going to ease up, so reinforcing the squad makes sense,” Postecoglou continued. “But we won’t panic. We’ll stick to our approach of being methodical and ensuring the players we bring in align with our goals for the remainder of the season.”
The Spurs boss has faced criticism over the team’s recent Premier League performances and his tactical approach. However, Postecoglou firmly defended his players and their commitment.
“They’re giving everything they’ve got, and the data backs that up,” he said. “They’re trying to execute the plan I’ve set out, so there’s no reason for me to be critical of their effort.”
Postecoglou also addressed his tense exchange with a reporter on Match of the Day following the Liverpool defeat, where he highlighted the impact of the team’s defensive injuries.
“I wasn’t angry,” he clarified. “But let’s be honest—most managers aren’t thrilled after a defeat. I’m just getting a bit weary of the same questions being asked repeatedly, especially when the context of our challenges is clear.”
