British Queen celebrates

Britain has set a new benchmark for wind power output, generating enough electricity to supply more than 23 million homes, the National Energy System Operator (NESO) said on Monday.

According to NESO, wind farms delivered 23,825 megawatts of electricity at 17:30 GMT on December 5, surpassing the previous record of 22,711 MW set on November 11. At the peak moment, wind power met 47.4% of the nation’s electricity demand.

The operator noted that the UK now hosts five of the world’s largest offshore wind farms. Earlier this year, in July, Britain also set a new solar generation record of 14 GW, providing nearly 40% of the country’s power at the time.

NESO added that the country’s 47 operational offshore wind farms currently supply almost 17% of Britain’s total electricity generation. Photo by Aubrey Dale, Wikimedia commons.
