Britain and the United States are stepping up cooperation on nuclear fusion, artificial intelligence and advanced computing as the two countries seek to accelerate the development of

commercial fusion power and capture a share of a potentially multi-trillion-pound global market.

Two new transatlantic agreements are due to be signed at the Global Fusion Summit in London on Monday, strengthening cooperation between British and American research institutions while creating a framework for closer regulatory coordination.

The first agreement will establish a new supercomputing partnership between the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and the US Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. The initiative will bring together expertise in fusion science, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing to speed up research and development of commercially viable fusion technology.

A separate UK-US Joint Statement will commit the two governments to closer cooperation on fusion regulation. The move is designed to provide greater clarity for investors and companies as the emerging industry moves from laboratory research towards commercial deployment.

Fusion seeks to reproduce the reaction that powers the Sun by combining hydrogen isotopes under extreme conditions, releasing enormous amounts of energy. Unlike conventional fossil-fuel generation, fusion does not produce carbon emissions during operation and could eventually provide a large-scale source of low-carbon electricity.

For Britain, the technology is also becoming an industrial and investment priority.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks said the UK-US partnership would help accelerate the transition from advanced research to commercial development, while supporting more than 10,000 jobs across Britain by 2030.

“The UK and US have a shared interest in turning fusion from a scientific ambition into a commercially viable energy source,” the government said, highlighting the economic opportunities for British companies, researchers and investors.

Foreign Office Minister for the Americas Chris Elmore said closer cooperation with Washington would give British businesses and researchers access to international expertise, investment and partnerships in technologies expected to shape future industries.

The new initiatives come alongside a series of additional investments intended to strengthen Britain's position in the emerging fusion economy.

The University of Birmingham, the Electric Power Research Institute and industry partners have secured £2.63 million for a joint project focused on advanced materials for fusion applications. The programme is expected to strengthen British industrial capabilities while linking UK researchers and businesses with international partners.

Japan is also increasing its involvement. Kyoto Fusioneering, one of Japan's largest fusion companies, plans to invest up to £3 million in Britain through Project ALBION. The project will support the development and testing of materials for STEP, the UK government's programme to develop a prototype fusion power plant.

The announcements coincide with the publication of the UK's new Fusion Investment Prospectus, which is intended to position Britain as an attractive base for companies and investors seeking to enter the emerging global fusion market.

The government estimates that the worldwide fusion industry could ultimately be worth between £3 trillion and £12 trillion. London is therefore seeking to turn Britain's existing scientific expertise into a commercially competitive domestic industry, attracting investment, developing supply chains and creating highly skilled employment.

The push builds on the government's commitment of £2.5 billion to fusion and follows the wider UK-US agreement on civil nuclear cooperation, described by ministers as the beginning of a new “golden age” for the nuclear relationship.

Taken together, the measures reflect a broader strategy: Britain wants to remain at the forefront of fusion science while ensuring that the economic benefits of commercialisation — from intellectual property and manufacturing to engineering and specialist employment — are captured domestically.

For both London and Washington, closer collaboration in fusion also reflects the growing strategic importance of advanced computing and AI to the development of next-generation energy technologies.

The race to commercial fusion remains technically demanding, and large-scale deployment is still some way off. But the UK government is betting that stronger international partnerships, clearer regulation and early industrial investment can give Britain a decisive advantage before a global fusion market fully emerges.
