British Queen celebrates

Heathrow Airport has just made aviation history. For the first time ever, more than 8 million passengers passed through the London hub in a single month, making it the first airport in Europe

to reach that milestone.

August 2025 proved to be Heathrow’s busiest month on record, capped off by its single busiest day ever on August 1, when more than 270,000 travelers took to the skies. Later in the month, Terminal 5 set its own record on August 22, handling 112,000 passengers in just one day.

What makes the achievement even more remarkable is how smoothly operations ran despite the surge in traffic. According to Heathrow:

- 98% of bags traveled with passengers as planned.

- 96% of travelers cleared security in under five minutes.

- Flight punctuality reached the highest levels in the airport’s history.

“August is set to go down in the history books,” said Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye. “We became the first European airport to handle over eight million passengers in a single month, and we did it while delivering industry-leading punctuality and service.”

Compared with summer 2024, Heathrow also saw major improvements: a 42% drop in baggage issues and a one-third reduction in same-day cancellations.

But with the airport now running at full capacity, Heathrow officials are once again pushing for expansion. Their latest proposal — a privately funded third runway — could be built within the next decade. They argue it’s essential for keeping the UK at the forefront of global travel and trade.
