A person has been taken to the hospital following a fire at a block of flats on Wolseley Street in Southwark.

The fire affected a small section of a three-room flat, with paramedics treating two individuals at the scene. One of them was later transported to the hospital for further treatment.

The fire, believed to have been caused accidentally due to unsafe candle use, broke out on Monday, September 9. The London Fire Brigade was called at 9:57 pm, and the fire was brought under control by 11:02 pm. Fire crews from Old Kent Road, Deptford, Shoreditch, and New Cross responded to the incident.

Following the fire, the London Fire Brigade reminded residents of important candle safety tips. A spokesperson said, “Candles are one of the leading causes of fires. It's essential never to leave a candle unattended and to keep them away from anything that could easily catch fire."

They recommended using battery-powered, flameless LED candles as a safer alternative. "While they may cost more initially, they last longer and provide better value for money."

For those who choose traditional candles, the Brigade advises placing them in heat-resistant holders on stable surfaces, away from flammable materials. It's crucial to never leave them unattended, especially around children and pets, and to extinguish them properly before going to bed.

The Brigade also encouraged residents to use their online Home Fire Safety Checker for personalized advice on reducing fire risks at home. Photo by Jwslubbock, Wikimedia commons.
