British Queen celebrates

A striking new addition may soon grace the skyline of the City of London, as plans for a towering 54-story structure are set to be presented this summer. If given the green light, this ambitious

project would rank among the tallest edifices in the Square Mile.

Brookfield Properties aims to revitalize 99 Bishopsgate with what they describe as a "landmark building." A spokesperson for Brookfield has confirmed the company's intention to submit an application to the City of London by mid-year, marking a significant milestone in the project's progress.

Currently in its second phase of public consultation, slated to conclude on April 12, the proposed tower represents a bold vision for urban renewal in the heart of London.

The existing skyscraper, housing tenants such as Huawei, faces a series of challenges, including pedestrian accessibility issues and a perceived lack of contribution to the City of London's goals for enhancing leisure amenities within the Square Mile.

According to Brookfield's spokesperson, the proposed plans prioritize community engagement, wellness initiatives, and sustainable design principles. They emphasize that the project aims to enhance public spaces surrounding the site, offering cultural attractions, improved retail options, and increased greenery to enrich the urban experience.

Moreover, the plans envision improved pedestrian connectivity to nearby landmarks and transportation hubs, notably Liverpool Street Station, thereby fostering a more vibrant and accessible urban environment.

Among the proposed features is the activation of Wormwood Street through the introduction of a vibrant market at street level, injecting new life into the area. It's worth noting that the site's proximity to historical assets, including sections of the original London Wall, adds a layer of complexity to the project's design and planning considerations.

Notably, the City of London has seen a surge in approved high-rise developments, exemplified by projects such as 55 Bishopsgate, standing at an impressive 63 stories, and 85 Gracechurch Street, reaching 32 stories.

Brookfield Properties, with a track record that includes notable projects like One Leadenhall, brings a wealth of experience to this ambitious endeavor, signaling a promising step forward in shaping the future skyline of London's financial district. Photo by Colin, Wikimedia commons.
