British Queen celebrates

The University of East London has entered the top tier of UK higher education after soaring 23 places in the latest Guardian University Guide, securing a spot in the top 40 for the first time.

The leap crowns a dramatic three-year rise of 80 places—an ascent the Guardian has labelled “meteoric”.

UEL now sits among the top six universities in London and records some of its strongest ever results across key performance measures. The University placed in the national top 30 for three metrics, including a top-three finish for Value-Added, which assesses how well students progress based on their entry qualifications. It also ranked 13th for assessment satisfaction and 29th for teaching satisfaction.

Professor Amanda Broderick, Vice Chancellor and President, said, “I am so proud to see the University of East London enter the top 40 in the Guardian University Guide 2026 league table, marking an incredible rise of 80 places over just three years.

This achievement reflects the dedication of our staff and students and the strength of our mission to transform lives by delivering the best careers-focused education in the country. Our position in the Guardian league table is a recognition of academic excellence, but it is also a testament to the hard work we have done over the last five years and our commitment to innovation, inclusivity and impact, all of which have resulted in a radically transformed institution.”

The Guardian announcement comes shortly after UEL was shortlisted for two Times Higher Education Awards—University of the Year and Business School of the Year—for its Royal Docks School of Business and Law.

A “mover and shaker” among modern universities

The Guardian league table aggregates eight measures, including student satisfaction, staff-to-student ratios, graduate employment outcomes and academic improvement.

Alongside its overall placement of 33rd out of 123 institutions, UEL recorded standout results across several subject areas. Interior design topped the national ranking, while sociology and social policy, and media and film studies each placed 4th. Graphic design ranked 10th.

UEL also climbed 13 places in the Expenditure Per Student metric and is now ranked 5th among London’s modern universities.

The University attributes its progress to its 10-year Vision 2028 strategy, which aims to reshape the role of higher education in improving opportunity and economic renewal during a period of national challenge. Positioned as the UK’s most socially inclusive university, UEL contributes over £1 billion to the economy each year and supports more than 4,000 jobs.

UEL continues to post strong results in indicators of student experience, regularly placing in the top 10 nationwide for graduate positivity. It was named the Times and Sunday Times University of the Year for Teaching Quality in 2025 and has rapidly become a leading environment for student entrepreneurship, rising from 90th to 2nd place for student start-ups in just a few years. Its graduate outcomes have also seen one of the largest improvements in the UK, with an increase of more than 25 percentage points. Photo by mattbuck (category), Wikimedia commons.
