British Queen celebrates

The Royal Academy of Music (RAM) has unveiled plans to open a new campus at London City Island in east London, promising "endless possibilities" for students and staff.

Scheduled to begin construction in spring 2026, following the completion of designs this autumn, the new facility will feature four large studios, ten teaching and practice rooms, a grand piano, and integrated recording capabilities.

Despite the expansion, RAM will maintain its primary base on Marylebone Road in central London, where most teaching, rehearsals, and public performances will continue to take place.

“This is a game changer for the Royal Academy of Music,” said RAM principal Jonathan Freeman-Attwood. “It’s a vital step forward as we elevate our world-class facilities to new heights and into a new setting.”

Located near the English National Ballet’s headquarters, the new site is being designed by AOC Architecture—renowned for projects like the Young V&A in Bethnal Green, the National Archives in Kew, and Somerset House Studios.

RAM emphasized that the 22-minute travel time between campuses will ease pressure on its central London facilities. However, it confirmed that the expansion will not increase student numbers, stating the new campus is intended purely to enhance the student experience. Photo by Philafrenzy, Wikimedia commons.
