Amid Argentine President Javier Milei's commitment to reclaiming the Falkland Islands through diplomatic means, Britain has staunchly asserted that the islands' sovereignty is not a matter
open for negotiation.
Following Milei's resounding victory in Argentina's presidential election and his explicit declaration of Buenos Aires' "non-negotiable" sovereignty over the Falklands, known as Islas Malvinas in Argentina, the UK government reaffirmed its position.
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak clarified, "The UK firmly upholds the Falkland Islands' sovereignty, alongside South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands." Emphasizing proactive defense of the Falkland Islanders' right to self-determination, the UK stands firm on its sovereignty over the territories.
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps reiterated this stance, stating unequivocally that the Falkland Islands are British, non-negotiable, and fundamental. He reinforced the Islanders' overwhelming vote of 99.8% in favor of remaining a British overseas territory, affirming the UK's unwavering support for their right to self-determination.
The Falklands, a British overseas territory since the 19th century, has been contested by Argentina, leading to a brief but impactful armed conflict in 1982. Despite British forces reclaiming the islands within two months, the conflict claimed numerous lives on both sides.
President Milei's recent remarks on recovering the islands via diplomatic channels align with his view that Argentine sovereignty over the Malvinas is indisputable. He pointedly ruled out the military option, stressing diplomatic efforts to regain control.
Milei even suggested a resolution reminiscent of Hong Kong's handover to China in 1997, proposing the UK cede the Falklands to Argentina. This proposal emerged amid Argentina's withdrawal from a 2016 cooperation pact earlier in the year, signaling a renewed push for talks over the island's sovereignty.
The populist leader, known for his anarcho-capitalist ideology and admiration for Margaret Thatcher, acknowledged the Islanders' perspectives, emphasizing their significance in the dialogue.
