The UK and Australia have agreed to deepen cooperation on artificial intelligence security, launching a new partnership aimed at countering the rapidly evolving risks posed by advanced

AI systems.

The agreement, set to be signed in Canberra on Monday, will link the UK AI Security Institute with the Australian AI Safety Institute under a new Memorandum of Understanding focused on monitoring frontier AI technologies and strengthening cyber defences.

Officials from both countries said the partnership would enable closer collaboration on identifying emerging AI threats, sharing intelligence on cutting-edge AI capabilities, and developing international standards for testing and evaluating powerful AI models.

The move comes amid growing concern over the speed at which AI systems are improving their ability to conduct sophisticated cyber-attacks. New research from the UK’s AI Security Institute warns that advanced AI capabilities are progressing faster than previously anticipated, creating new opportunities for both cybercriminals and security agencies.

Under the agreement, the two institutes will exchange research findings, coordinate work on AI risk assessments, and establish staff exchange programmes to strengthen operational ties.

The deal will be formally signed by UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan and Australia’s Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy Andrew Charlton during talks in Canberra.

Narayan said the long-standing security relationship between the two countries was becoming increasingly important as AI technology accelerates.

“AI is moving at extraordinary speed, and the risks are evolving just as quickly, particularly in cyber security,” he said. “No nation can manage these challenges alone.”

He added that collaboration with trusted allies such as Australia would help both countries strengthen defences while ensuring AI technologies are developed and deployed safely.

The agreement expands the UK institute’s growing network of international partnerships focused on AI safety and governance. The UK body already works with research organisations and governments through initiatives including the International Network for Advanced AI Measurement, Evaluation and Science.
