Sales of used electric vehicles in the Netherlands surged sharply in April, nearly doubling compared to the same period last year, according to figures released by industry association BOVAG.
A total of 13,791 second-hand electric cars were sold during the month, highlighting a significant shift in consumer preferences.
A spokesperson for BOVAG suggested that rising fuel prices are likely influencing buyers to opt for electric alternatives, accelerating an already growing trend in the used-car market. The organization had previously flagged this upward movement in March, noting increasing interest in electric mobility.
Despite the boom in electric vehicle sales, the broader used-car market saw a slight decline. Total transactions fell to 169,570 vehicles, down from 173,430 in April last year.
BOVAG described the jump in electric car sales as “striking,” with these vehicles now accounting for more than 8 percent of the used-car market—an increase that underscores their expanding role in the automotive landscape.
Trade data further reflects this rising demand. Imports of used electric vehicles doubled in April, while exports declined. Nevertheless, the Netherlands remained a net exporter of electric cars, with more vehicles leaving the country than entering it. Photo by Dennis Elzinga, Wikimedia commons.
