French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz privately warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the United States could ultimately abandon Kyiv’s
interests during negotiations with Russia, according to a report by German magazine ‘Spiegel’.
Citing a transcript of a confidential call involving Zelensky and several European leaders, ‘Spiegel’ reported that Macron expressed concern the U.S. might agree to territorial concessions without securing firm security guarantees for Ukraine.
“There is a risk that the United States could betray Ukraine on territorial issues without clear security assurances,” Macron reportedly said.
During the same call, held on Monday, Merz allegedly told Zelensky that American negotiators were “playing games” and urged him to remain “very cautious” in the coming days.
German officials declined to comment on the report, while the French presidency did not immediately respond to requests for confirmation.
The warnings came as European leaders moved to demonstrate support for Zelensky following renewed U.S.-Ukrainian discussions aimed at revising a peace proposal that had initially been viewed as favoring Russia.
