The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will make an official visit to Japan from 18 to 22 September 2025, with events in Tokyo and Osaka. Their visit will celebrate the close friendship between
the United Kingdom and Japan and explore new opportunities for collaboration.
Over the course of their stay, the Duke and Duchess will take part in engagements that highlight education, sustainability, innovation, opportunities for young people, and women’s leadership. The visit will also shine a spotlight on the UK’s role at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, where the UK Pavilion will showcase British creativity and global partnerships.
Highlights of the visit include:
- A meeting with Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
- An audience with Crown Prince and Crown Princess Akishino.
- A tree planting ceremony at the Akasaka State Guest House, marking the 50th anniversary of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 1975 visit to Japan.
- A visit to the Ryogoku Kokugikan National Sumo Arena.
- Engagements at Kasai Marine Park, focusing on biodiversity and environmental education.
- A reception at the British Ambassador’s Residence celebrating the MUSUBI Initiative.
- A cultural visit to Koyasan, including Kongobuji Temple and Okunoin Cemetery.
- A tour of the UK Pavilion at Expo 2025, with a focus on British innovation in clean energy and sustainability.
- Participation in a UN Women panel at the Women’s Pavilion, Expo 2025.
The Duke and Duchess will be joined by senior members of their household and supported by the British Embassy in Tokyo and the Consulate-General in Osaka.
