UK Sport has announced a significant investment of £330 million ($418 million) in Olympic and Paralympic sports as part of its preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, though funding for
athletics and canoeing will see reductions.
At the Paris Olympics, Britain secured 10 medals in athletics, finishing seventh in the athletics medal table. Keely Hodgkinson delivered Team GB's only athletics gold with her victory in the 800 metres.
The budget allocated for athletics has been reduced to £20.5 million for Los Angeles, down from £22.2 million for Paris. Canoeing will also face a cut, with its funding dropping by over £500,000 to £12.5 million.
"The decisions we’ve made regarding funding were based on each sport’s potential," said UK Sport Chief Executive Sally Munday in an interview with the BBC on Monday.
She emphasized that UK Athletics will still receive more than £30 million across both Olympic and Paralympic programs. "We believe this investment will put them in a strong position to support their athletes on the road to LA," Munday added. Photo by Ibex73, Wikimedia coomons.
