The UK Government convened the 4th Islands Forum on May 8, 2024, at the Isle of Anglesey/Ynys Môn in Wales, focusing on addressing housing delivery issues for island communities.
Led by Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove and attended by representatives from various UK islands, along with ministers and officials from the Welsh Government, Scottish Government, Northern Ireland Executive, and local MP Virginia Crosbie, the forum centered on the unique housing challenges encountered by island communities nationwide. These challenges include the heightened costs of construction and the strains posed by an influx of holiday homes and seasonal demands.
Participants engaged in discussions revolving around innovative strategies to tackle these housing challenges, exchanging best practices and insights. They explored avenues to effectively utilize powers and funding, including leveraging expanded council authorities to address issues such as second homes and vacant properties. Additionally, they emphasized the significance of ensuring that UK Government levelling up funding initiatives actively support efforts to bolster housing and regeneration endeavors.
The forum's agenda builds upon the substantial progress made in previous gatherings, including the establishment of a Connectivity Task and Finish Group and the initiation of a £1.6 million UK Government project aimed at enhancing crucial transport links for island communities. Notably, £3 million has been allocated to the Orkney-based European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) over two years, underscoring the commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
Chaired by Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove and supported by Levelling Up Minister Jacob Young, the forum featured representation from the devolved governments, including Northern Ireland Executive Minister John O’Dowd MLA and Welsh Government Minister Rebecca Evans MS. The Scottish Government was represented by Erica Clarkson, Head of Islands Policy. Local leaders and representatives from various island councils also participated in the discussions.
Attendees had the opportunity to visit the MSparc Science and Technology Park, showcasing Anglesey's innovative initiatives in skills, energy, and housing. Recognizing the significance of the Welsh language to the Isle of Anglesey, Michael Gove explored a virtual reality village developed by Animated Technology to practice his Welsh language skills.
The next Islands Forum, scheduled for Autumn 2024, will be hosted by Argyll and Bute Council, continuing the collaborative efforts to address housing challenges and promote sustainable development across UK islands.
