On Friday, the British government announced that Oliver Dowden would take over as deputy prime minister, replacing Dominic Raab, who resigned earlier that day following allegations of
bullying colleagues. Although the deputy prime minister role has no official powers, it allows the deputy to temporarily replace the prime minister in his absence or if he is unable to perform his duties.
Dowden, who is currently serving as the cabinet office minister in Sunak's government, previously held the position of chairman of Sunak's Conservative Party. However, he resigned from that role last June after the party experienced two significant defeats in by-elections.
