Britain’s Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned from government on Thursday, delivering a major blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer and intensifying unrest within the ruling Labour Party.

In a resignation letter published on X, Streeting said he no longer had confidence in Starmer’s leadership and suggested the party should begin preparing for a future leadership contest.

“It is now clear that you will not lead the Labour Party into the next general election,” Streeting wrote. He added that Labour lawmakers and trade unions wanted “a battle of ideas, not of personalities or petty factionalism” when deciding the party’s future direction.

Streeting said the leadership debate “needs to be broad” and should include “the best possible field of candidates,” adding that he supported such an approach and hoped Starmer would help facilitate it.

The resignation marks one of the most significant cabinet departures since Labour came to power and is expected to increase political pressure on Starmer amid growing internal criticism over the government’s direction and electoral prospects.
