The Environment Agency (EA) has successfully halted a major illegal dumping operation at a former industrial site near Chesterfield, following a rapid response to public reports.
The intervention at the derelict Wingerworth site began on Thursday, 30 April, less than 24 hours after local residents reported suspicious vehicle movements. Upon inspection, EA officers discovered approximately 100 tonnes of household waste that had been illegally deposited and, in some areas, buried.
Swift intervention and site security
Follow-up inspections conducted last week confirmed that all illegal activity has ceased. To prevent further incursions, the Environment Agency collaborated with the landowner to install a permanent rock barrier, effectively securing the perimeter.
A criminal investigation is currently underway. EA investigators are working to identify the specific haulage companies and vehicles involved in the illegal transport of the waste.
Zero tolerance for 'waste cowboys'
The crackdown aligns with the Government’s broader Waste Crime Action Plan, which emphasizes early intervention and increased enforcement powers.
Ben Hocking, Environment Agency Area Environment Manager, said:
"Our action at this site has successfully disrupted a criminal operation before it could escalate. This case highlights the vital role the public plays; communities are our 'eyes and ears.' Reporting suspicious activity immediately allows us to intervene swiftly and protect the environment from being blighted by waste crime."
Waste Minister Mary Creagh added:
"These waste cowboys are shameless, but we have cracked down hard to stop further damage in Chesterfield. Our message is simple: break the rules and we will hunt you down. This Government has a zero-tolerance approach to waste crime."
The 10-point plan against waste crime
This enforcement action is part of the Environment Agency’s new 10-Point Plan, a sustained programme designed to:
Act Early: Address illegal activity before it becomes established.
Strengthen Prevention: Improve site security and public awareness.
Enhance Detection: Work with partners to track and prosecute illegal hauliers.
How you can help stop waste crime
The Environment Agency is urging the public and landowners to remain vigilant to prevent illegal dumping:
Check the Register: Before hiring anyone to remove waste, always check the public register of waste carriers. If they aren't listed, they are operating illegally.
Secure Your Land: Landowners are reminded that they can be held liable for waste dumped on their property. Regularly inspect and secure empty land or derelict buildings.
Report It: If you notice suspicious waste movements, unlicensed operators, or unusually cheap disposal offers, report them anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or the Environment Agency incident line at 0800 80 70 60.
