British Queen celebrates

Morrisons has confirmed that more than 100 of its outlets — including cafes, convenience stores, florists, and pharmacies — will shut their doors this year as part of a major company overhaul.

The supermarket chain, which had already announced plans to close 50 of its in-store cafes earlier this year, is extending its restructuring efforts. Alongside those closures, 17 Daily convenience stores, 13 florists, four pharmacies, and all 18 of its “Market Kitchen” locations will also close.

The decision is part of what Morrisons calls its “programme of renewal” — a bid to streamline operations and refocus the business. But for many shoppers, it’s another sign of the challenges facing the British high street.

In addition, around 35 meat counters and 35 fish counters are expected to be shut down as well.

Most of the Daily store closures have already taken place, with many shops closing for good back in April.

What’s happening to Market Kitchen?

Morrisons launched its Market Kitchen concept as an in-store dining experience, offering freshly prepared meals and a variety of cuisines cooked on-site. However, the 18 remaining locations will soon close, with exact dates yet to be announced.

According to the supermarket, these changes are intended to “accelerate growth, optimise operations, and help mitigate recent significant cost increases.

Morrisons CEO: closures are a “necessary” step

Chief executive Rami Baitiéh described the closures as a “necessary part” of plans to reinvigorate the brand.

Baitiéh acknowledged that the Morrisons Café has long been a community favourite — known for affordable, hearty meals — but admitted that not every location can stay open.

In some locations, Morrisons plans to partner with third-party operators to replace the cafes with new, more specialised offerings.

Financial struggles behind the decision

The company’s financial results paint a challenging picture. After recording losses of £1.3 billion in 2023 and £919 million last year, Morrisons did manage to report a £2.1 billion pre-tax profit for the year ending October 27, 2024.

Even so, Baitiéh said the supermarket is still feeling the pressure of high costs and changing consumer habits.

He also noted that recent government policies and rising operational costs have added new financial challenges.
