HSBC’s mobile and online banking services are back up and running after a technical issue left thousands of customers locked out of their accounts on Wednesday.
The outage began around 11 a.m. UK time, with users flooding Downdetector to report problems logging in and making transactions. For several hours, customers couldn’t access their money—sparking plenty of frustration online.
By mid-afternoon, HSBC confirmed the issue had been resolved.
“Mobile and online banking services are returning to normal following an earlier disruption,” a spokesperson said. “We’re really sorry, and appreciate our customers’ patience as we continue working to ensure everything is fully restored.”
This isn’t the first time UK banks have faced tech headaches. A parliamentary report earlier this year revealed that the country’s biggest banks and building societies clocked up more than 800 hours of unplanned outages over the past two years, cutting off millions of people from their cash.
For now though, HSBC customers should be able to log in as usual. Photo by Pam Brophy / HSBC Bank Building: Newbury / CC BY-SA 2.0, Wikimedia commons.
