British Queen celebrates

Even before the first race is run at the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics, discussions have already begun about London potentially hosting the Games once again—this time in 2040.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan revealed to ITV News that he hopes to see the capital become the first city to host the Olympics four times. Khan said he has already approached Labour leader Keir Starmer, seeking government support to kick-start a formal bid. During his visit to Paris this summer, Khan also plans to lobby the British Olympic Association to rally behind the idea of a London 2040 bid.

A standout feature of Khan’s vision is a commitment to sustainability. He proposes reusing much of the infrastructure from the 2012 London Games, aiming to deliver what could be "the greenest Games ever."

The 2040 Olympics would be the next possible opportunity for London to host, with the 2028 Games set for Los Angeles and Brisbane lined up for 2032. Meanwhile, competition for the 2036 Games is already heating up with active bidding underway.

To date, only two cities—London and Paris—have hosted the modern Olympics three times. Perhaps fittingly, Khan, who has been elected Mayor of London three times, may also have his sights set on securing a historic fourth term to match his Olympic ambitions.
