Germany’s Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new head coach of the England national football team, the Football Association (FA) announced. Tuchel becomes the third foreign coach in
England’s history, following Sweden’s Sven-Goran Eriksson and Italy’s Fabio Capello.
The former Chelsea boss will be supported by Englishman Anthony Barry, who previously worked with Tuchel at Chelsea. The FA expressed their excitement in a statement on Wednesday, with CEO Mark Bullingham saying, "We are thrilled to have hired Thomas Tuchel, one of the best coaches in the world, and Anthony Barry, one of the best English coaches, to support him."
Tuchel, 51, succeeds Lee Carsley, who had been in temporary charge following the resignation of Gareth Southgate. Southgate stepped down after England’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in July.
According to the FA, Tuchel was their "preferred candidate" after an extensive interview process. He will officially begin his role on January 1, 2025, with a contract set to run until the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.
Tuchel’s managerial career includes stints at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and most recently Bayern Munich, where he departed at the end of the 2023-24 Bundesliga season. Photo by Alexander Böhm, Wikimedia commons.
