Chelsea pushed through a turbulent week to secure a place in the FA Cup final, defeating Leeds United 1-0 at Wembley thanks to an early header from Enzo Fernandez.
The Argentine midfielder, recently at the center of controversy, struck in the 23rd minute—slipping between defenders to meet a precise cross from Pedro Neto and nodding home what proved to be the decisive goal.
The victory comes against a backdrop of instability at Stamford Bridge. Fernandez had only just returned from suspension after giving an interview suggesting he was unsettled at the club and open to a move to Spain. His absence coincided with a poor run of form that saw Chelsea suffer five consecutive Premier League defeats.
That slump ultimately led to the dismissal of head coach Liam Rosenior, who was sacked last week following a heavy 3-0 loss to Brighton. Assistant coach Calum McFarlane has since stepped in on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Despite the upheaval, Chelsea showed renewed focus at Wembley. They controlled much of the first half and, although Leeds improved after the break following tactical adjustments by manager Daniel Farke, they were unable to find an equaliser.
Leeds, who have spent much of the campaign battling relegation, created a handful of chances. However, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez produced key saves to deny Brenden Aaronson and Anton Stach, ensuring his side held onto their narrow lead.
“It’s amazing. The boys reacted exactly how they needed to,” Sanchez said after the match. “We’ve stayed positive in training, and now we have another chance to play in a final.”
Chelsea will now face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 16. City, already winners of the League Cup and still in the hunt for the Premier League title, secured their place with a 2-1 victory over Southampton. Photo by Vespa125125CFC at English Wikipedia
