Bruno Fernandes is edging ever closer to rewriting the Premier League record books after another influential display for Manchester United. The Portuguese playmaker registered his 17th assist

of the season in a 2–1 defeat to Leeds United, leaving him just three shy of the all-time single-season mark.

That record—20 assists—is currently shared by Thierry Henry (2002/03) and Kevin De Bruyne (2019/20). With six matches still to play, Fernandes is firmly on course to surpass them both.

Late start, remarkable surge

What makes Fernandes’ campaign particularly striking is how slowly it began. His first assist didn’t arrive until October, when he set up Harry Maguire in a win over Liverpool. Since then, however, he has been relentless—producing 17 assists in just 22 appearances, an exceptional creative rate.

If he maintains that pace, projections suggest he could finish the season with 21 assists, setting a new Premier League benchmark.

More than just numbers

Fernandes’ influence extends beyond raw statistics. As United’s captain and creative hub, he dictates tempo, presses aggressively, and consistently delivers in key moments. His understanding with teammates—especially Casemiro—has been central to United’s attacking play, with six of his assists this season going to the Brazilian midfielder.

He also reached a major milestone recently, recording his 100th assist for Manchester United in all competitions. Only club legends Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and David Beckham have achieved that feat before him.

Set-piece specialist chasing another record

Fernandes is also closing in on another notable achievement. With nine assists from set-pieces this season, he is within touching distance of Steven Gerrard’s record of 11 in a single campaign. Given his precision from dead-ball situations, that milestone appears well within reach.

Favourable run-in

Manchester United’s remaining fixtures offer Fernandes a strong chance to make history. Matches against familiar opponents—including Liverpool and Nottingham Forest—could provide the platform for those crucial final assists. Photo by YantsImages, Wikimedia commons.
