The Portuguese population in this area of South Lambeth boasts a variety of exceptional dining options.

The Three Lions

The name suggests a focus on sports. The interior is adorned with signed Benfica jerseys, memorabilia, and televisions consistently tuned to Portuguese football matches. However, it is also renowned for serving some of the finest arroz de marisco (seafood rice) in the city, featuring an abundance of fresh fish atop velvety rice—a serving size that certainly warrants a takeaway container.

Estrela Bar

This spacious restaurant features an expansive terrace that, on sunny days, evokes the ambiance of downtown Porto. The à la carte menu is quite satisfactory, with the classic francesinha sandwich prepared to perfection. Yet, the true delight lies in the daily handwritten specials. Pork with clams frequently graces the menu, showcasing tender belly meat paired with succulent clams. Additionally, the meat offerings are commendable, often including half or whole roasted rabbit. Velho Portugal

A hallmark of many establishments in Little Portugal, the portion sizes at Velho are notably generous. The dishes are not only abundant but also delicious: clams arrive steaming, generously seasoned with garlic and fresh parsley in a simple wine sauce; bacalhau à brás, featuring rich salt cod, potatoes, and eggs, is a hearty favorite; and steaks are served simply alongside fries. The wine selection is impressive as well, with most bottles priced under £45, including some oak-aged reds for more festive occasions.

There are plenty of other Portuguese restaurants in other parts of London, however, including the Michelin-starred Lisboeta. Led by chef Nuno Mendes, this restaurant offers “array of petiscos, plates, pots and platters, all bursting with colour, freshness and flavor”.
