British Queen celebrates

The British High Commission in Honiara hosted its second edition of the popular London Fashion Week Show Blo Iumi on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, featuring

exceptional local designers and talented models who showcased the finest in Solomon Islands fashion.

This event celebrated the 40th anniversary of London Fashion Week, one of the "Big Four" fashion weeks alongside Paris, Milan, and New York. London Fashion Week is renowned for presenting the work of top British designers and attracting international buyers, media, and fashion enthusiasts. Iconic brands like Burberry regularly showcase their collections at the event.

The 40th edition of London Fashion Week aimed to unite creative communities and celebrate the diversity and creativity that make London a cultural hub. The celebration honored not only the fashion on display but also the people who contribute to making the event a success.

The Fashion Show Blo Iumi, supported by The Great Fund, featured seven designers and 55 models, including five contestants from the Miss Solomon Islands Pageant 2024, and drew over 100 excited guests.

During the opening ceremony, Deputy High Commissioner to the Solomon Islands, Emma Jane David, remarked, "Like in the Solomon Islands, London’s fashion is deeply connected to its diversity. The city’s fashion reflects its multicultural population, drawing inspiration from a wide range of influences to create unique and eclectic styles. British fashion is also a leader in sustainable and ethical fashion movements."

This year’s Fashion Show Blo Iumi included four categories: Lavalava wear, Evening wear, Lotu (church) wear, and Contemporary traditional wear. A panel of four judges had the difficult task of selecting the top designs and models.

Hahe Alatala of Hahe Designs emerged as the winner, receiving a trophy and a mentoring session with a UK designer. Rosemary Boe of Rosie’s Couture and Wendy Gwaena of WG Designs took second and third places, respectively.

Other designers, including Sonia Rochenberg of Sons and Daughters Designs, Prudence Beck of Threads Investment, Lava Grossmith of Lava’s Original, and Luke Gegeu of EL Designs, received commendations for their outstanding contributions.

The event also featured impressive body art from local artists Hamid Ramokasa, Fred Oge, Wilson Kabe, Cassey Hairiu, and Emmanuel Manu, who adorned five bodybuilding athletes. The evening was further highlighted by a musical performance from Blad P2A and Khazin, adding to the event’s vibrant atmosphere.

The 2024 edition of Fashion Show Blo Iumi was a celebration of fashion, culture, and creativity, firmly establishing it as a highlight in the Solomon Islands’ event calendar.
