British Queen celebrates

The UK’s Indo-Pacific Minister, Catherine West, has arrived in Bangladesh, marking the first high-level UK visit since the formation of Bangladesh’s Interim Government in August 2024.

The one-day trip underscores the UK's commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s political and economic recovery.

During her visit, Minister West is scheduled to meet with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain. Discussions will focus on political reforms, economic collaboration, trade, security, and migration. The minister will also engage with student leaders, political representatives, and business leaders to strengthen ties and foster mutual cooperation.

The UK has voiced consistent support for the Interim Government’s efforts to enhance accountability and pave the way for an inclusive democratic process in Bangladesh. Minister West’s visit reinforces this stance and highlights the UK’s intention to aid the nation’s recovery and growth.

Beyond political discussions, the UK has announced vital humanitarian funding for Bangladesh. This includes assistance for Rohingya refugees and host communities, who will benefit from clean water, sanitation, healthcare, protection services, and shelter materials. The funding has already supported 200,000 Rohingya refugees with food aid for three months and will now expand to provide further essential services.

Additionally, UK-funded aid will support communities affected by this year’s natural disasters, demonstrating the UK’s broader commitment to addressing humanitarian challenges in Bangladesh.

Minister West’s visit reflects the UK’s ongoing dedication to strengthening ties with Bangladesh and fostering a partnership built on shared values and mutual growth.

UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific Catherine West said:   “The UK supports the Interim Government’s work to build a more prosperous and democratic future for the Bangladeshi people.

“I am proud to announce new UK funding to support Rohingya refugees and the Bangladeshi communities which host them with essential services and assistance.”

British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke said:

“I am delighted to welcome UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific Catherine West to Bangladesh. This visit will deepen and broaden the UK’s economic and security partnership with Bangladesh.

“Bangladesh is currently undergoing a transformation, and as a longstanding friend, the UK will assist in the economic and political reforms which will help Bangladesh to continue its social and economic growth as it moves towards an inclusive and democratic future.”
