British Queen celebrates

The Council of Europe's European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) has published a monitoring report assessing the state of racism and intolerance in the UK.

A primary recommendation in the report is for the UK government to extend the current 28-day "move-on" period provided to newly recognized refugees transitioning from asylum support to mainstream social support.

ECRI’s report highlights that the current 28-day period frequently leaves refugees facing homelessness and destitution, hindering successful integration. The commission states, "The ECRI recommends that UK authorities extend the move-on period beyond 28 days to prevent gaps in support, particularly regarding housing and subsistence payments."

The report emphasizes the importance of bridging this support gap to promote stability and successful integration for refugees. ECRI will conduct an interim follow-up on this recommendation within two years.

The UK government responded to ECRI’s findings, acknowledging the importance of a smooth transition for refugees and indicating it is considering changes to the move-on period. In its response, the government reiterated its commitment to supporting refugees, noting, "The UK has a proud history of providing protection in line with the Refugee Convention and European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)."

The government detailed current support available, including guidance through Migrant Help and partner organizations, access to the labor market, and housing assistance for vulnerable refugees.
