On Monday, the UK expressed concern over China's recent military exercises near Taiwan, warning that these actions heighten tensions and pose a risk of "dangerous escalation" in the Taiwan
Strait.
"We do not support any unilateral efforts to alter the status quo," stated the UK's Foreign Office in an official statement. "We urge restraint and call for the avoidance of any actions that could undermine peace and stability."
China's military, following a day of war drills on Monday, threatened further action against Taiwan if deemed necessary. The exercises were met with strong condemnation from both Taiwan and the United States.
Earlier that day, a spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed the UK's commitment to resolving the Taiwan issue through dialogue rather than military means.
"The UK's long-held position remains that this matter should be resolved peacefully by both sides of the Taiwan Strait, through constructive dialogue rather than military activity or force. Our stance on this has not changed," the spokesperson told reporters. Photo by Heeheemalu, Wikimedia commons.
