The United Kingdom is seeking to expand its economic and financial links with Guatemala and Honduras, bringing together senior figures from the three countries’ financial sectors to explore
new opportunities for trade, investment and sustainable growth.
The discussions were organised by the British Embassy Guatemala City and Crown Agents Bank, which hosted executive-level breakfast meetings with financial sector representatives from Guatemala and Honduras.
The talks, held with the participation of Crown Agents Bank chief executive Neeraj Kapur, focused on the importance of stronger financial connections in supporting cross-border commerce and attracting investment.
Among the issues considered were ways to improve access to international financial markets, strengthen links between financial institutions and create new channels for businesses seeking to operate across borders. Participants also examined how financial services can contribute to broader and more inclusive economic development.
The meetings come as commercial relations between the UK and the two Central American economies continue to generate significant trade flows.
UK-Guatemala trade was valued at approximately $472.5 million in 2025, while bilateral trade between Britain and Honduras reached $298.4 million over the same period.
British officials said deeper financial integration could help companies in all three markets take advantage of these existing trade relationships while opening the door to further investment.
The discussions also highlighted the wider role of modern financial infrastructure. Reliable payment systems, access to international banking networks and stronger institutional links can make it easier for companies to trade internationally and for investors to identify and pursue opportunities.
Juliana Correa, His Majesty’s Ambassador to Guatemala and Honduras, said closer connections within the financial sector were essential for economic development and international commerce.
She said the dialogue demonstrated Britain’s intention to build closer economic relationships with both countries while encouraging financial innovation and supporting development that is more inclusive and sustainable.
The engagement reflects the UK’s broader effort to strengthen commercial partnerships beyond traditional markets and deepen connections with rapidly developing economies in Latin America.
For Guatemala and Honduras, closer cooperation with British financial institutions could provide businesses with improved access to international networks, while UK companies and investors could gain greater exposure to opportunities in Central American markets. Photo by gov.uk
