The European Union would welcome the United Kingdom “with open arms” if it chose to rejoin the bloc’s single market, according to Jean-Noel Barrot, France’s foreign minister. His remarks
come as the UK government intensifies efforts to rebuild ties with Brussels following years of post-Brexit strain.
Speaking at a joint event in Berlin alongside Germany’s top diplomat, Barrot pointed to a noticeable shift in tone from London. He highlighted recent signals from the British government suggesting a willingness to align more closely with EU economic rules in pursuit of growth.
Earlier the same day, UK finance minister Rachel Reeves indicated that Britain is open to adopting several EU regulatory standards to boost its economy. The comments have fueled speculation that London may be reconsidering aspects of its post-Brexit strategy.
Barrot noted that discussions in the UK have increasingly included references to closer economic integration, including potential alignment with EU frameworks and even mentions of a customs union.
“If the UK is ready to return to the single market—with all the rights and obligations that come with it—it will be welcomed back,” he said.
The remarks come as Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his Labour government have grown more outspoken about the economic drawbacks of Brexit. The UK formally left the European Union in 2020 following the 2016 referendum decision.
