The Israeli tourism sector celebrated a significant milestone on Wednesday morning as Wizz Air resumed its London to Tel Aviv route, with the 7:25 am flight from London Luton marking a
hopeful return to "normal" travel patterns for British visitors.
Despite a decline in travel from the UK to Israel following the events of October 7, 2023, newly released data highlights the steadfast commitment of UK tourists. In 2024, a total of 79,000 UK visitors traveled to Israel, equating to 42% of the 2023 figures. December 2024 saw 6,500 UK arrivals—a 63% increase compared to December 2023.
Challenges and resilience
Travel remained active in 2024 despite significant obstacles, including restrictive advice from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) and limited flight availability. Direct options were scarce, with only El Al and Israir providing reduced services, forcing many to rely on indirect routes. For comparison, 2019—a year unmarred by COVID-19 or the 2023 conflict—saw a peak of 235,000 UK visitors to Israel.
New opportunities as travel restrictions lift
Wizz Air’s return follows the FCDO’s recent decision to lift travel restrictions to Israel, which has reinstated standard travel insurance terms and restored traveler confidence. This policy change has also paved the way for other airlines to re-establish their services. EasyJet plans to resume flights at the end of March, British Airways will return in early April, and Virgin Atlantic is accepting bookings via its code-share partnership with El Al.
Optimism from Israeli tourism leaders
Michael Ben-Baruch, head of Israel’s UK tourism office, hailed the resumed flights as a clear indication that “Israel wants you back.” He expressed gratitude to those who continued to visit Israel after October 2023, emphasizing the emotional support such visits provided to a nation in recovery.
“Israel thrives on interaction with the outside world and the global Jewish community,” Ben-Baruch stated. “The sound of non-Hebrew voices on our streets this past year brought comfort and solidarity. The time has come to reset your Israel travel plans. We are ready to welcome you back when you are ready to return.”
While acknowledging the world has changed since the tragic events of 2023, Ben-Baruch encouraged visitors to explore Israel’s enduring resilience, beauty, and the warmth of its diverse communities.
