Central London ushered in 2025 with its largest-ever celebration, as approximately 100,000 ticketholders gathered to witness a dazzling display of fireworks, lighting, and music.
Millions more joined the festivities remotely via the BBC, experiencing a groundbreaking show that paid tribute to key British moments through innovative holographic technology.
A night to remember
The event, organized by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, brought together locals and tourists alike along the River Thames. Over 12,000 fireworks and 420 lights illuminated the night sky, synchronized to a carefully curated soundtrack blending music and voiceovers.
For the first time ever, holographic animations were seamlessly integrated into the New Year’s Eve display. These stunning visuals highlighted iconic British symbols and milestones, including the Union Jack adorning the London Eye in honor of the 80th anniversary of D-Day and a tribute to Team GB's achievements at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics. The London Eye also celebrated its upcoming 25th birthday, adding to the nostalgic yet hopeful theme.
A global message of unity
Paddington Bear made a heartwarming debut, delivering a special holographic message of hope and unity. The show also nodded to 2024’s cultural moments, including Charli XCX’s viral “brat summer,” which captivated youth worldwide on social media.
The accompanying soundtrack featured a diverse lineup of artists such as Sabrina Carpenter, Sir Elton John, One Direction, Natasha Bedingfield, and Tems. Voiceovers included contributions from notable figures like Dame Imelda Staunton, Sir Ian McKellen, Ellie Simmonds OBE, and Mayor Sadiq Khan himself, alongside heartfelt messages from D-Day veterans.
A celebration watched worldwide
Beginning with Big Ben's iconic chimes, the event was broadcast live to millions globally and garnered tens of millions of views across social media platforms. The BBC’s coverage of the event, consistently one of the UK’s most-watched programs, once again showcased London as a vibrant global capital.
The display, beyond being a cultural spectacle, provided a significant boost to London's economy. City Hall estimates suggest that ticketed attendees alone contribute over £14 million annually to local businesses, with additional revenue generated by non-ticketed visitors flocking to the city.
