British Queen celebrates

The Home Office reported that 882 people crossed the Channel in 15 boats on Tuesday, marking the highest number in a single day this year.

Over 800 migrants arrived in the UK in one day, setting a new record for the year. The Home Office stated that 882 individuals made the journey across the Channel in 15 boats on Tuesday, averaging 59 people per boat.

This latest surge brings the provisional total for arrivals this year to 12,313. This figure is 18% higher than the same time last year, which saw 10,472 crossings, and up 5% from 2022, which recorded 11,690 crossings by this stage, according to an analysis by the PA news agency of government figures.

In 2022, the UK saw 29,437 migrant arrivals, a 36% decrease from the record 45,774 arrivals in 2021. Since the general election was called on May 22, over 2,000 arrivals have been recorded, totaling 2,431, with immigration being a key issue in the campaign.

Data since 2018 reveals that 126,658 people have arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel over the past six and a half years. Since the government struck a stalled deal to send migrants to Rwanda in April 2022, 81,677 people have made the journey.

Since Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister in October 2022, pledging to "stop the boats," the tally of crossings has reached nearly 50,000, currently standing at 49,376. Photo by Steve Cadman, Wikimedia commons.
