Actor Kevin Spacey reportedly celebrated at a private members club in London after being acquitted of sexually assaulting four men. Following a high-profile trial, the double Oscar winner was
visibly emotional when the jury at London's Southwark Crown Court delivered not guilty verdicts on all counts.
According to reports, Spacey marked the occasion by sipping whisky with around seven friends at the Groucho Club in Soho on Wednesday night. A witness mentioned that he looked very proud and was seated at the entrance for all to see. Although no Happy Birthday song was sung, the atmosphere seemed upbeat.
After the celebration, Spacey left the club around midnight, using an umbrella to shield himself from the rain.
The allegations against Spacey, which included nine sex attacks on four men during his tenure as artistic director of the Old Vic theatre, had significant consequences for his career and finances. The star was required to pay £25.5 million to the producers of House of Cards after being fired from the show. He also faced at least £1 million in defense fees and was edited out of the film "All The Money In The World."
Brand and Culture expert Nick Ede suggested that despite the setbacks, Spacey's talent would likely lead to a career resurgence, possibly in Broadway or London's West End. He also noted that Netflix, from which Spacey was dropped and sued for $31 million, might have to consider a financial settlement now that the actor has been cleared of charges.
On the steps of the court after the verdicts were delivered, Spacey expressed gratitude to the jury, his legal team, and his loyal manager and friend Evan Lowenstein for their support throughout the trial. He mentioned that there was a lot for him to process after the trial but that he was humbled by the outcome. Photo by Pinguino k, Wikimedia commons.
