According to tax authority data, more than 200 British crypto investors became millionaires.
Fresh figures from the UK’s HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) showed that 240 investors recorded capital gains of more than £1 million over the last tax year, generating a total of £717 million in profits. The total taxable capital gains from cryptoassets amounted to £1.38 billion in the year ending April 2025, with the profits spread among 17,600 individuals.
This represents an average gain of £78,000 per person. It is the first time such data has been published following the introduction of a new section in the self-assessment tax return dedicated to capital gains from cryptoassets for the 2024/25 tax year.
James Murray, MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Paymaster General, said: “Taxes on profits from cryptoassets are collected in the same way as taxes on any other profits, and we want to make sure that people making gains from cryptocurrency know what tax they are required to pay. This important work supports the government’s efforts to reduce the tax gap, ensuring that everyone pays their fair share towards our vital public services.”
