British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has revealed that the government's proposed pay increase for public sector workers will result in significant costs amounting to billions of pounds.
These unforeseen expenses were not initially accounted for in the budget and will need to be sourced from other areas within the government's financial plan.
During a press conference, Sunak emphasized the magnitude of the pay award, stating that it is one of the most substantial in decades. However, he acknowledged that the additional costs associated with the increase were not anticipated by the government, leading to potential consequences.
Sunak affirmed that the government will not resort to borrowing in order to finance the higher pay rates, nor will they impose increased taxes on citizens. However, he mentioned that the levy paid by many recent immigrants would experience a rise, serving as one avenue to partially offset the expenses incurred.
