Britain is on track to experience its hottest June day on record this week, as an intense heatwave sweeping across western Europe pushes northward into the UK.

Forecasters say temperatures could climb to 39°C (102.2°F) by midweek, surpassing the current June record of 35.6°C, first set in 1957 and matched in 1976. The four-day heatwave is expected to affect much of southern and central England, as well as parts of Wales.

The UK's national weather service, the Met Office, warned that some areas could exceed 39°C, bringing conditions close to the country's all-time temperature record of 40.3°C, set during the historic July 2022 heatwave.

The latest surge in temperatures follows an exceptionally warm spring. In May, Britain recorded its hottest day ever for the month, with temperatures reaching 35.1°C.

In response to the extreme conditions, the UK Health Security Agency issued only its second-ever heat-health alert, following a similar warning during the 2022 heatwave. Officials cautioned that the high temperatures pose a risk to life, including for otherwise healthy individuals, while urging older people and vulnerable groups to take extra precautions.

Meteorologists said high humidity levels are expected to intensify the impact of the heat, increasing the risk of heat stress. The Met Office also warned of "tropical nights," when overnight temperatures remain above 20°C, offering little relief from the daytime heat.

The heatwave is part of a broader weather pattern affecting much of Europe. In France, extreme temperatures have reportedly contributed to the deaths of three elderly people and forced some schools to close, with temperatures forecast to exceed 42°C. Heat alerts have also been issued in parts of northern Spain.

Across England and Wales, hospitals, schools and transport networks are preparing for potential disruptions. During previous heatwaves, authorities advised people to limit travel, while some schools shortened operating hours or closed early due to the extreme conditions.
