The London Lions have announced ambitious plans to construct a state-of-the-art basketball arena, marking a significant step in the sport’s growth within the capital. The project has received
the support of London Mayor Sadiq Khan, aligning with his broader vision to elevate basketball in the city.
A new era for basketball in London
The proposed venue aims to serve as the long-term home for elite basketball in London, providing a high-performance environment for the Lions’ men’s and women’s teams. Beyond professional competition, the facility is designed to support grassroots development, youth programs, and community engagement initiatives, ensuring increased access to the sport across the city.
Additionally, the project aligns with the mayor’s sustainability goals, incorporating green building practices to contribute to London’s environmental ambitions.
Strengthening London’s global basketball presence
With the Lions striving to return to top-tier European competition and the mayor’s push to attract more NBA games and events, the arena would position London as a premier global basketball hub. The plans coincide with Khan’s recent commitment to establishing a dedicated basketball task force to further grow the sport in the capital. New data indicates that over 1.5 million people in the UK play basketball weekly, making it the second most popular team sport in the country.
City Hall is actively collaborating with the Lions, offering technical expertise to identify a suitable location and facilitate the project’s development.
Key voices on the project
Tomas Okmanas, Co-founder of Tesonet & London Lions Owner:
"London Lions have the potential to build a basketball powerhouse in Europe, fueled by local talent and a passionate fan base. To compete and succeed at the highest level, we need a dedicated top-tier venue. This project marks a bold step toward that future."
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan:
“London is the sporting capital of the world, and I fully support the London Lions in their mission to create a world-class basketball facility. This arena will be a vital hub for the sport, generating opportunities for young athletes, attracting new fans, and contributing to our economy. We are committed to working with the Lions to secure their long-term home and build a better London for all.”
Lenz Balan, London Lions CEO:
“Our goal is to cement London’s place on the global basketball map. A purpose-built home for elite basketball will not only enhance the sport but also create a dynamic space for the community to experience the energy and excitement of the game at the highest level.”
Backed by Tesonet’s vision
The Lions’ ownership group, Tesonet, has demonstrated strong financial backing for the club’s ambitions. Co-founded by Tomas Okmanas, the technology accelerator previously propelled Nord Security—a Lithuania-based cybersecurity firm now valued at $3 billion. Tesonet also holds a stake in BC Žalgiris, one of Europe’s most successful and self-sustaining basketball clubs, known for regularly selling out its 15,000-seat Žalgirio Arena in EuroLeague competition.
With this backing, the Lions have the resources to develop a world-class basketball venue, provided the necessary approvals are secured.
Enhancing fan experience & player development
Purpose-built basketball arenas enhance both gameplay and spectator experience. By bringing fans closer to the action with improved sightlines, enhanced acoustics, and cutting-edge technology, the new stadium would create an electric atmosphere. Additionally, modern training and performance facilities would help develop the next generation of basketball talent.
For now, the Lions will continue playing at the Copper Box Arena while plans for the new stadium progress. Further details regarding the timeline and location are expected to be revealed in the coming months. Photo by Wikimedia commons.
