Pep Guardiola, one of football’s most decorated managers, has signed a new two-year contract with Manchester City, extending his tenure at the club beyond a decade.
“Manchester City means so much to me,” Guardiola said in a statement on Thursday. “This is my ninth season here, and we’ve shared so many amazing moments. I feel a deep connection to this football club.”
The announcement quells recent speculation about Guardiola’s future, which intensified following the October departure of director of football Txiki Begiristain, a close ally from their days at Barcelona. Rumors had suggested that Guardiola might leave at the end of his current deal this season, but the extension secures his place at the helm.
The club confirmed the new deal with a lighthearted social media video, where an off-camera pundit described Guardiola’s future as “a huge soap opera.” The Spaniard replied emphatically, “I’m not moving. I can assure you.”
Guardiola has transformed Manchester City into one of Europe’s elite clubs since joining in 2016. Under his leadership, City has won 18 trophies, including a historic treble in 2023 comprising the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup. His meticulous approach and tactical genius have earned widespread acclaim, building on a remarkable career that saw him claim 14 trophies with Barcelona and seven with Bayern Munich.
Despite his recent success, Guardiola remains as motivated as ever. “I have everything a manager could ever wish for,” he said. “Now, the focus is on adding more trophies to the ones we’ve already won.”
The contract extension comes as City navigates a challenging start to the 2024-25 season. The team has struggled in recent weeks, losing four consecutive matches for the first time since the Abu Dhabi United Group’s 2008 takeover. A significant factor has been the absence of Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder Rodri, sidelined with a knee ligament injury since September.
Still, City remains in second place in the Premier League, trailing Liverpool by five points. The two teams will face off in a highly anticipated clash on December 1.
City’s next match is against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, as Guardiola looks to steady the ship and continue his pursuit of glory.
Guardiola’s achievements place him among the greatest managers in football history. With 39 trophies across three of Europe’s top clubs—Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City—his impact on the game is undeniable. At 53, his drive to push boundaries and set new records shows no signs of waning.
