Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Casemiro will leave the club at the end of the season, bringing an end to his spell at Old Trafford.
The Brazilian’s current contract expires this summer, and while it includes an option for a one-year extension, United have decided not to activate it, according to a club source. The decision forms part of a wider long-term rebuild of the squad and had been agreed well before Thursday’s official confirmation. Casemiro had asked the club to clarify his future at this stage of the season.
Casemiro joined United from Real Madrid in August 2022 in a deal worth around £60 million. A five-time Champions League winner before arriving in England, he quickly became a central figure in United’s midfield. Across 146 appearances, the defensive midfielder scored 21 goals and provided leadership during a period of transition for the club.
One of his standout moments came in February 2023, when he scored in United’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in the League Cup final, helping the club secure their first major trophy in six years. He also played a role in United’s FA Cup triumph in 2024.
Despite confirmation of his departure, Casemiro insisted his focus remains fully on the remainder of the season. “This is not goodbye yet,” he said. “There are still many memories to create over the next four months. I will continue to give everything I have to help this club succeed.”
Manchester United currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal, whom they face at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The team are coming off a morale-boosting 2-0 derby win over Manchester City, marking an impressive debut for caretaker manager Michael Carrick following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
