Two metal detectorists, Craig Best and Roger Pilling, have been found guilty of conspiring to sell Anglo-Saxon coins worth £766,000 overseas. The coins, believed to
have been buried by a Viking in the ninth century, have not been declared as treasure nor handed to the Crown. The two men were caught when an undercover detective posing as a buyer infiltrated their scheme.
The defendants were also found guilty of possessing the coins, which were believed to be part of the undeclared Herefordshire Hoard. They could face imprisonment for several years. Photo buy The Portable Antiquities Scheme/ The Trustees of the British Museum, Wikimedia commons.
