British Queen celebrates

For one day only, Trafalgar Square will transform into a vibrant hub of Japanese food, music, and traditions – and you won’t want to miss it. On September 21, the UK’s biggest annual

celebration of Japanese culture, Japan Matsuri, returns to London. This much-loved festival has been drawing huge crowds for years, and 2025 promises another full day of authentic street food, live performances, and cultural showcases – all without spending a penny on entry.

What to expect

The full programme is still under wraps, but if previous years are anything to go by, visitors can look forward to a jam-packed schedule from 10am until 8pm. Expect everything from traditional dances and taiko drumming to martial arts, cosplay, and contemporary Japanese music. Past lineups have even included Kendo demonstrations, costume parades, and exhibitions of modern Japanese art – so there really is something for everyone.

And of course, no Japanese festival would be complete without food. Festival-goers will be spoiled for choice with stalls serving up everything from sushi and steamed buns to ramen and sake. Alongside the food, you’ll also find traders offering unique crafts and keepsakes – perfect if you want to take a little piece of Japan home with you.

Why You Should Go

Japan Matsuri is more than just an event – it’s an immersive cultural experience. In the middle of central London, you’ll be able to taste, hear, and see the very best of Japanese traditions without needing a flight to Tokyo. Best of all? It’s completely free to attend.
