This week, Paraguayan President Santiago Peña made an official visit to the United Kingdom, marking a significant milestone in the long-standing relationship between the two countries.
The visit included a royal audience with His Majesty King Charles III at Windsor Castle — a moment President Peña described as “historic.”
The visit comes as the UK and Paraguay celebrate more than 170 years of diplomatic relations. It highlights both nations’ commitment to strengthening collaboration in areas such as trade, sustainable investment, education, and climate action.
President Peña's agenda included high-level meetings with political, business, and academic leaders. Notably, he delivered a keynote speech at Canning House and took part in a business roundtable with top UK companies in the energy and technology sectors.
A central highlight of the visit was the signing of the United Kingdom–Paraguay Friendship Charter, formalized by Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy. The charter outlines a mutual commitment to enhanced cooperation in trade, security, democratic governance, education, and climate initiatives.
British Ambassador to Paraguay, Danielle Dunne, who accompanied President Peña, remarked: “It was an honour to witness this historic occasion. The UK and Paraguay are natural partners, and this visit reflects our shared vision for sustainable and inclusive growth.”
The visit also showcased Paraguay’s increasing importance as a strategic partner in Latin America. Bilateral trade between the UK and Paraguay has seen robust growth, with total exchange in goods and services reaching £70 million — a 42.9% increase from the previous year.
President Peña’s visit marks the beginning of a new chapter in UK–Paraguay relations, reinforcing the shared values and forward-looking partnership between the two nations.
