A court in Dhaka has issued an arrest warrant for British Labour MP Tulip Siddiq as part of a corruption investigation tied to Bangladesh's former ruling regime.

Siddiq, who is the niece of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is being investigated by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission over allegations that she unlawfully acquired a plot of land in the capital. The probe forms part of a broader inquiry into potential misconduct during Hasina’s administration.

Sheikh Hasina, who led the country for two decades, stepped down in August 2024 following widespread public protests.

According to Bangladesh’s state news agency, the court also issued arrest warrants for 50 individuals, including members of Hasina’s family—among them Siddiq’s mother.

A spokesperson for Siddiq strongly denied the allegations, calling them “completely false” and “politically motivated.”

Siddiq resigned from her role as a Treasury minister in January amid mounting scrutiny linked to the investigation. At the time, U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s ethics adviser, Laurie Magnus, stated there was “no evidence of improprieties,” according to the BBC. Photo by Chris McAndrew, Wikimedia commons.
