A State Visit by Donald Trump has been a topic of discussion ever since he began his second term as U.S. President just over a month ago. Now, it appears that the process
is officially underway.
Reports suggest that during his upcoming trip to Washington, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is expected to extend an invitation to President Trump for another State Visit to the United Kingdom.
A second state visit for Trump
If confirmed, this would be a historic event, making Donald Trump the first elected U.S. leader to receive two State Visits to the UK. The former president has often expressed admiration for the British Royal Family, and in recent weeks, there has been growing discussion about the role of King Charles and Prince William in strengthening the "special relationship" between the U.S. and the UK. A State Visit would be a key element of that diplomatic engagement.
Where will the visit take place?
Unlike his 2019 visit, President Trump will not be hosted at Buckingham Palace, which is currently undergoing renovations and is not expected to host formal events until at least 2027.
Instead, Windsor Castle is seen as the most likely venue for the visit, though some reports have suggested Balmoral Castle as a possible alternative. However, Balmoral’s remote location would pose logistical challenges, especially as plans are reportedly in motion for President Trump to address both Houses of Parliament—something that would require a venue closer to London.
Strengthening royal ties with the U.S.
In parallel, discussions are also ongoing about a potential royal visit to the United States later this year. The Prince and Princess of Wales are expected to be at the forefront of such a trip. Sources indicate that Donald Trump was highly impressed by Prince William when they met at the reopening of Notre Dame in Paris in December 2024.
Looking ahead, the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the Bill of Rights in 2026 may also provide an opportunity for a formal invitation from the White House to the British Royal Family.
